Nikk Mager
Nikk Mager is an award-winning vocalist, his first taste of showbiz was when ‘Jane McDonald’ surprised him at his school in front of his classmates with a BBC camera crew to inform Nikk that he had been chosen from thousands to perform on the prime-time TV show ‘Star For a Night’ singing Cat Stevens “Father & Son”. The late great Dame Barbara Windsor was on the panel and quoted Nikk as ‘young, good looking, talented, a joy, we loved you, your family must be so proud’.
When Nikk left school at 16 he decided to pursue his singing career and honed his craft performing in nightclubs, weddings, private functions then an audition caught Nikk’s attention.
ITV were looking for contestants for a new reality TV show ‘Popstars The Rivals’ where they were looking for boyband and girlband members. Nikk stormed the audition process landing him a place in the live finals. Pete Waterman quoted ‘it will be a tragedy if you don’t make this band’.
It came to pass that Girls Aloud were the winners of the series, however Nikk formed his alliances with 4 other guys from the reality series as the runners up., and a new boy band was formed called ‘Phixx’.
Nikk and his Phixx members signed a record deal with ‘Concept Music’ and ‘Hyperactive Music Management’ and soon they were performing on Top Of The Pops with their first single “Hold On Me” which was a top 10 hit, penned by the hit maker ‘John Mcglauglin’ the songwriter behind Echo And The Bunnymen and Busted.
Nikk and his band mates worked with Duran Duran and got the nod of approval for Phixx to do a cover of their huge hit “Wild Boys”. When this was released in 2004 it went to straight to Number 12 in the UK Charts. Phixx would go on to have two more UK Top 20 hits: – “Love Revolution” in 2004, and “Strange Love” in 2005. This was a whirlwind of a time in Nikk’s career performing at huge arenas all over the UK, and internationally as well.
Their album “Electrophonic Revolution!” went to Number One in South Africa which was followed by a headlining tour of South Africa and meeting the family of Nelson Mandela at his home.
In 2006 Nikk left the band and carried on gigging on his own up and down the country as a solo artist. In 2009 Nikk was approached and selected to be lead singer of the hit revue show ‘Here Come the Boys’ a theatre tour choreographed and staged by Cris Judd (J Lo’s ex. Husband). The opening night was at The O2 in London, (May 2009). Nikk was joined on stage with the original Chippendale members with the tabloids dubbing the show as a ‘Musical with Muscles’. Nikk promoted the show by performing the title track “Here Come The Boys” on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ hosted by Ruth and Aamon Holmes showcasing Nikk’s vocal and dancing ability.
One of Nikk’s most enjoyable experiences was working in Tokyo for 7 months in 2018, where Nikk was hired for his chiselled looks down to earth charm and vocal/dance ability. ‘Men Tokyo’ was predominantly a dance show featuring men from around the globe choreographed by critically acclaimed Cris Judd, the show was peppered with Nikk’s awesome renditions.
When the Covid pandemic hit Nikk obviously couldn’t perform live during this period, but he didn’t allow it to stop his creative juices from flowing so he teamed up with top notch producer Mick Lister and penned a full album during lockdown. All Nikk’s heart and soul went into recording this album, it was a very reflective time for him to take stock of all his experiences thus far.
Nikk performed in his hometown of Halifax in 2022 to 5000 people at the amazing ‘Piece Hall’ where he supported the talented ‘Ellie Sax’ the world-renowned Saxophone player. He belted out dance hits like “Titanium” by David Guetta and Becky hills huge dance floor stomper “Crazy What Love Can Do” to get the party all fired up.
Nikk has just been awarded ‘Best Male Vocalist of 2023’ by the Leeds branch of the CIU Entertainment Section – voted for by the people of 40+ venues for all his hard work as a solo artist on the entertainment scene. Nikk has also returned to studio to record his new single “Hanging On To Hope” which is scheduled for a release in 2024.
Nikk’s passion is still burning strong and quotes ‘I’m extremely excited for what the future holds, it’s looking extremely positive’. Nikk Mager is one to watch.
